The Circuit

Hello again, Sakhir. For the second time in 2025, F1 will descend on the Bahrain International circuit paddock this week.

But unlike for the pre-season test in February, this time we’re going racing for real.

A Real Test of a Race Car

The 21st edition of the Bahrain Grand Prix takes place a little later than in recent years, after hosting the F1 season-opener for four straight campaigns between 2021 and 2024.

Last season, to accommodate Ramadan, the race was run on a Saturday, with Qualifying on Friday and two Free Practice sessions on Thursday.

The 5.412km Sakhir layout was also the setting for the F1 curtain-raiser in 2006 and 2010. That season, the race took place on a lengthened layout of the track.

Bahrain’s range of corners and straights makes it ideal for pre-season testing, as our Test and Reserve Driver Fred Vesti explains.

“Bahrain is a key track for car development. It serves as our baseline for car improvements,” he says.

“It's also a great racetrack. It usually makes for a good spectacle. The surface in Bahrain is very rough, and the temperature is usually very high, so the tyres are really under pressure.

“Tyre management and a good balance in the car is really important for a good race in Sakhir.”

Duel in the Desert and More

The track has provided our team with many good memories. Mercedes has triumphed six times in Bahrain – five times with Lewis Hamilton, and once with Nico Rosberg. Only Ferrari have stood on the top step of the podium more.

In 2014, Nico and Lewis produced one of the most unforgettable duels of the hybrid era under the lights, scrapping for the same piece of tarmac lap after lap in the desert, with the rest of the field far behind.

George also made his debut for the Silver Arrows in Bahrain, when he stepped in for Lewis in 2020. That night, the race was run around the shorter outer loop layout and was called the Sakhir Grand Prix.

Mercedes-Benz as an engine supplier has won seven times in Bahrain, and all have come from cars built in Brackley. In addition to Lewis and Nico, Jenson Button triumphed for Brawn GP in 2009.

Sands of Time

Another Mercedes-related nugget of information you might not know about Bahrain is that the current race lap record was set by a Mercedes Power Unit… all the way back in 2005!

Twenty years later, Pedro de la Rosa’s 1:31:447 effort from the Grand Prix in his McLaren still stands.

Perhaps the most important three-pointed star memory in Bahrain came in 2010, when the marque returned to F1 as a works team for its first race since 1955.

The start of an illustrious and special journey at the pinnacle of motorsport.

Weather Watch

This may be the BahRAIN Grand Prix, but don’t expect to see any precipitation over the race weekend, with wet weather and showers a rarity in the middle of the desert.

No session in the past five race weekends has seen any rain. That said, there was a light shower during testing back in February. Watch this space.
