The Circuit

Round seven of the 2025 F1 World Championship takes place at Imola, and sees the drivers and teams begin the European leg of the season, which will encompass 10 of the next 11 races.

Imola also forms the start of the second triple-header of the season, with the paddock moving on to Monaco and Barcelona in the following two weeks.

The Autodromo Dino e Enzo Ferrari first hosted an F1 race in 1980, when it held the Italian Grand Prix for the one and only time in its history.

Indeed, that year was the only occasion in 75 years of F1 history that Monza did not host its national Grand Prix. From 1981 through to 2006, the circuit appeared on the calendar every year as the San Marino Grand Prix, before being dropped for 2007.

The track returned during the Covid-affected 2020 season as the Emilia-Romagna Grand Prix, a year which saw the team claim an unprecedented seventh consecutive World Constructors' title with a one-two finish.

Imola hosted an F1 Sprint Race for the one and only time to date in 2022, and in 2023 the race was cancelled altogether because of disastrous flooding at the track and surrounding region.

Fred's View

"Imola is one of those old and historical tracks that pushes a driver to their limits. It is an old school, technical track that is not easy to get right," says Test and Reserve Driver Fred Vesti.

"It requires high skill and a bit of risk-taking as well. That challenge is what all drivers love, and what makes Imola so special."

Home Comforts

Kimi can class the Emilia-Romagna Grand Prix as his home race, having grown up and learned his race craft on the go-kart tracks of nearby Bologna.

An Italian has triumphed at Imola twice in F1 history. Elio de Angelis won the 1985 Grand Prix at the track for Lotus, while Riccardo Patrese won in 1990 for Williams.

Home favourites Ferrari have won eight times at the circuit, the joint-most for a Constructor along with Williams. George's best result at the track came in 2022, when he finished P4 in the Grand Prix in his W13.

In 2024, Mercedes-Benz celebrated 300 Grands Prix as a works team in Formula One, and George collected the Bandini Trophy award after a drive through the countryside in the 1924 Targa Florio -winning Mercedes.

Weather Watch

We also might fancy the idea of Italy as a holiday destination, but Imola can be one of the colder races on the F1 Calendar, with an average ambient air temperature of just 14.8C

Based off the past five Grands Prix, there is a 30% chance that rain will play a part over the course of the weekend.
