PETRONAS Reflects on 2020 Season and Historic Seventh Title Double

PETRONAS is marking an incredible milestone in its partnership with the Mercedes-AMG Petronas F1 Team, with a seventh consecutive F1 World Championship double.

Since 2010, PETRONAS has been the Title and Technical Partner to the team, where its fluids and technology have been at the heart of some incredible results and created standout memories.

This season, Mercedes made history by securing a record-breaking seventh consecutive Constructors’ World Championship title, a feat that has never been achieved before. The success is even more remarkable when considered in light of the unexpected challenges of this year.

PETRONAS tailor-makes the Fluid Technology Solutions™ to meet the exacting demands of the Mercedes F1 Power Unit and gearbox, namely the PETRONAS Primax fuel, PETRONAS Syntium engine oil and PETRONAS Tutela functional fluids that have powered the team to victory.

“Globally we have faced an unprecedented year and I am incredibly proud to see how everyone at PETRONAS pulled together in the face of adversity and continued to push for progress,” said PETRONAS President and Group CEO, Tengku Muhammad Taufik.

“The successes we have achieved over the years as part of the Mercedes-AMG PETRONAS Formula One Team underscores the dynamic collaboration of our partnership, demonstrates the relentless determination and talent of our people, and is testimony to the prowess of our Fluid Technology Solutions.”

“With our collective strength and shared purpose, we look forward to charting even greater achievements with the Mercedes team as a progressive energy and solutions partner enriching lives for a sustainable future.”

Toto Wolff, Team Principal and CEO of the Mercedes F1 Team, added: “When we returned to F1 in 2010, we hoped that one day we’d be able to fight for wins and maybe even a championship – but no one would have ever thought that we’d write history together with seven consecutive double championships.

“PETRONAS has been with us from day one, and the bond between Kuala Lumpur, Brixworth and Brackley has only gotten stronger over the years and keeps getting stronger.

“PETRONAS has played an enormously important part in the success we’ve enjoyed together, and we cannot thank them enough for their continuous support and this great relationship.

“We’ve formed a truly iconic partnership in the sport and we’re looking forward to a bright future together.”

PETRONAS Fluid Technology Solutions has also powered Lewis Hamilton to a world-record equalling seventh Drivers’ Championship title, matching the great Michael Schumacher, and becoming Formula 1’s record holder for most race victories.

Lewis said: “I want to say a huge thank you to everyone at PETRONAS. This year threw some big challenges at all of us, but we overcame them together – socially distanced, but working more closely together as a team than ever before.

“PETRONAS is an important part of our team and we wouldn’t be where we are today without them. Unfortunately, the circumstances this year mean that we cannot celebrate together at the Twin Towers in Kuala Lumpur, but I’m sending everyone at PETRONAS a lot of positivity – I’m so grateful for your support, for continuing to raise the bar together with us.

“Thank you for being with us on this incredible journey – together, we’ve made history this year.”

In 2020 alone, PETRONAS and Mercedes have achieved 13 wins, 15 pole positions, 25 podiums, 28 front rows and 860 laps led from the 17 Grands Prix.

Since the introduction of the Hybrid power-unit in 2014, the partnership has taken a total of 102 Grand Prix victories in 138 races, 109 pole positions and lifted 204 trophies.

“The year 2020 has been challenging for everyone, but I’m very proud to be part of a team that has achieved so much this year,” said Valtteri Bottas.

“PETRONAS plays an integral role in our team, not just because they provide the lifeblood of our engines, but also because they share the same determination and relentless pursuit of perfection that has pushed this team to the very front of F1.

“The historic success this year would not have been possible without PETRONAS – thank you all for your continuous support.”
