Born in Vienna, Austria, Toto’s motorsport journey began at 17 when he attended a race at the Nürburgring. He went on to compete in Austrian Formula Ford and claimed a class win at the 1994 Nürburgring 24 Hours before retiring from racing to pursue business ventures.
After studying economics and business, Toto founded investment firms Marchfifteen and later Marchsixteen, initially focusing on tech companies during before expanding into industrial and listed businesses.
His investments included HWA AG, the company behind Mercedes-Benz’s DTM and Formula 3 programs. In 2002, he co-founded a racing driver management company with Mika Häkkinen and returned to racing, achieving success in the FIA GT Championship and winning the 24 Hours of Bahrain in 2006.
Toto entered Formula One management in 2009 by investing in Williams F1, becoming Executive Director in 2012 and helping secure the team’s first win in eight years.
In 2013, he joined Mercedes as Managing Partner, acquiring a 30% stake and assuming responsibility for all Mercedes-Benz motorsport programs.
Under his leadership, Mercedes dominated Formula One, winning eight consecutive Constructors’ Championships and seven Drivers’ titles In 2020, Mercedes restructured ownership, with Toto, INEOS, and Mercedes-Benz Group each holding equal shares.
In 2025, Crowdstrike CEO George Kurtz acquired a minority stake in Toto’s ownership entity, further strengthening the team’s strategic partnerships.
